Masonry Contractor in Ephrata, PA
We’re a regional masonry crew based in York that works in Ephrata regularly. Brick repointing, chimney work, retaining walls, patios, and historical restoration. Lancaster County’s oldest borough deserves masons who understand what they’re working with.

A borough with 290 years of brick, stone, and good craftsmanship
Ephrata was settled in the 1730s, anchored by the Ephrata Cloister (one of the country’s earliest religious communal societies and now a National Historic Landmark just off East Main Street). That deep history shows in the housing stock: stone foundations from the 1700s and 1800s, brick rowhomes from the 19th century along State, Main, and Cocalico Streets, and a long stretch of Pennsylvania German farmsteads in the surrounding township. All of it eventually needs masonry attention, and most of it deserves better than what a quick-fix contractor would give it.
We work in Ephrata regularly. We know the housing stock and we know how the Ephrata Borough permit process works for different types of jobs. Permits go through the Codes Division at 124 S. State Street. Inspection fees are billed separately ($55 per residential inspection, $110 commercial), and the building permit has to be displayed visibly on the property during work. If you’re in Ephrata Township instead of the borough, that’s a separate office at 265 Akron Road with its own process. We handle both.
If you have brick that’s failing, mortar that’s crumbling, a chimney that needs work, or any masonry project from a small repair to a full restoration, send us a photo. We’ll tell you what it actually needs.
Every masonry service, one crew, one call
Here is what we do. Each one links to a full page with details, process, and pricing information.
Retaining Walls
Stone, block, or brick. Footings below frost, real drainage, geogrid where needed. Most retaining wall work in Ephrata is in residential properties on the borough edges and in the surrounding farmland, where grade changes and old stone walls are common.
Retaining wall detailsPaver Patio Installation
Concrete pavers, flagstone, or clay brick. Built on a compacted base that actually holds its shape through Pennsylvania winters. The patio that is still flat in twenty years.
Patio installation detailsHistorical Restoration
Ephrata has some of the oldest residential masonry in Lancaster County. We repoint with lime-based mortars appropriate to the era of the house, custom-mix to match the original color, replace failed bricks one at a time, and stabilize old stone foundations the way they were meant to be repaired. Buildings from the 1700s and 1800s deserve methods that match their age.
Historical restoration detailsBlock & Brick Wall Installation
New garden walls, privacy walls, foundation walls, mailbox pillars. Block, brick, or block core with brick veneer. Built with proper footings and clean joints.
Wall installation detailsMasonry Sealing
Brick, stone, pavers, and concrete. Penetrating sealers that stop water before it freezes and spalls. The cheapest insurance your masonry can have.
Sealing detailsHardscaping
Patios, walkways, stone steps, fire pits, seating walls, and everything else permanent in the yard. Doing it together costs less than doing it in pieces.
Hardscaping detailsThree centuries of weather and a lot of soft brick
The oldest masonry in Ephrata is genuinely old. Stone foundations from the 1700s, brick walls from the 1800s, mortar joints that have been doing their job for longer than most countries have existed. That brick is soft. The original mortar was lime-based, designed to flex and breathe. After this many decades, the joints need attention. The mistake we see constantly: contractors who repoint historic Ephrata brick with modern portland cement. The brick face spalls, water gets trapped in the wall, and an irreplaceable piece of Lancaster County history gets damaged in a single bad repair.
Beyond the historic core, Ephrata Borough and Ephrata Township have a wide mix: 19th and early 20th century rowhomes near the borough center, mid-century houses on the side streets, and newer development further out. Each era has its own typical masonry problems. Older brick needs careful repointing. Mid-century homes often have foundations and chimneys due for their first serious maintenance. Newer homes need patios, retaining walls, or sealing on brick that’s starting to weather.
The Pennsylvania German farmsteads scattered across the surrounding countryside have their own masonry needs too: stone springhouses, summer kitchens, smokehouses, and bank barns with limestone foundations that are still working after 200 years but could use repointing. We work on all of it.
Ephrata’s oldest brick walls have been standing for over 200 years. They didn’t get there by accident, and they won’t make it another 200 with the wrong mortar. We make sure they get the right one.

What Ephrata homeowners ask us
Yes, we work in Ephrata regularly. It’s about 50 minutes from our York base, but Ephrata is firmly in our regional service area. No special trip charge. If you’re in the borough or any of the surrounding areas (Ephrata Township, Akron, Lititz, Adamstown, Reamstown, New Holland, Denver), we’ll come out for a free estimate.
It depends on the work and whether you’re in the borough or the township. In Ephrata Borough, building permits are required for structural work, walls over a certain height, and most additions. Permit applications go through the Codes Division at 124 S. State Street (717-738-9202). Inspection fees are billed separately: $55 per residential inspection, $110 per commercial. The permit has to be displayed visibly on the property during construction. Ephrata Township is a separate office at 265 Akron Road with its own application process. We pull permits and handle the paperwork as part of the job, regardless of which jurisdiction you’re in.
Often yes, but the age of the brick matters. For 19th and early 20th century brick, we usually find good matches through local salvage yards and specialty brick suppliers. For 18th century brick — yes, that exists in Ephrata, especially around the Cloister and the original borough core — exact matches are harder. Those bricks were hand-made, irregular, and unique to their kiln. In those cases we sometimes turn (rotate) the existing brick to a sound face, or use carefully sourced reclaimed material. We show you samples before ordering and we’re honest when an exact match isn’t possible.
Same as the rest of York County. Repointing runs $10 to $25 per square foot. Paver patios run $14 to $22 per square foot. Retaining walls run $40 to $80 per square foot of wall face. Sealing runs $1.50 to $4 per square foot. We give written, itemized estimates after seeing the site. Each of our service pages has more detailed pricing information.
Typical lead time is 2 to 6 weeks depending on the season and the size of the job. Spring and early summer book up fastest. Small jobs like sealing or minor repointing can sometimes be scheduled within a week or two. For larger projects, the sooner you start the conversation, the better your spot on the schedule.
