Masonry work for a town that is full of it
Hanover has some of the best-maintained older homes in York County. It also has some that are overdue for attention. The brick rowhouses and pre-war homes downtown, the older commercial buildings on Baltimore Street, the residential neighborhoods spreading south and west toward McSherrystown and Penn Township. All of it is brick, block, stone, or concrete, and all of it eventually needs a mason.
We work in Hanover regularly. We know the housing stock, we know what kinds of brick were used in which eras, and we know what the Borough of Hanover permitting office requires for different types of work. When you need a permit, we pull it. When you do not, we tell you that too.
If you have been looking at a cracked chimney, a leaning wall, a patio that has seen better days, or a foundation that is letting water in, we can help. Send us a photo and we will give you a straight answer about what it needs.

Retaining Walls
Stone, block, or brick. Footings below frost, real drainage, geogrid where needed. The walls that stop Hanover’s sloped yards from slowly sliding into the neighbor’s property.
Retaining wall detailsPaver Patio Installation
Concrete pavers, flagstone, or clay brick. Built on a compacted base that actually holds its shape through Pennsylvania winters. The patio that is still flat in twenty years.
Patio installation detailsHistorical Restoration
Hanover has no shortage of pre-1950 brick. We repoint with lime mortar, match the original joint profile, and replace failed bricks one at a time. The work that keeps old houses old in the good way.
Historical restoration detailsBlock & Brick Wall Installation
New garden walls, privacy walls, foundation walls, mailbox pillars. Block, brick, or block core with brick veneer. Built with proper footings and clean joints.
Wall installation detailsMasonry Sealing
Brick, stone, pavers, and concrete. Penetrating sealers that stop water before it freezes and spalls. The cheapest insurance your masonry can have.
Sealing detailsHardscaping
Patios, walkways, stone steps, fire pits, seating walls, and everything else permanent in the yard. Doing it together costs less than doing it in pieces.
Hardscaping detailsBrick built the town. Good mortar keeps it standing.
Most of the older homes in Hanover Borough were built with locally produced brick between 1850 and 1940. That brick is soft by modern standards. It was designed to work with lime mortar, which flexes and breathes and lets moisture out. When a modern contractor repoints those joints with hard portland cement, the brick itself becomes the thing that fails. We see it all over Hanover, and we fix it.
The newer homes in Penn Township, Conewago Township, and the neighborhoods south of town have different issues: settling patios, cracked retaining walls, chimneys that have weathered 20 or 30 years without maintenance. These are all straightforward masonry jobs when the right methods are used and shortcuts are not taken.
Whether your house is 150 years old or 15, we approach it the same way: figure out what is actually wrong, use the right materials for the job, and do the work so it does not need to be done again for a very long time.
Half the work we do in Hanover is fixing what the last guy did wrong. The other half is keeping good walls from getting to that point.

What Hanover homeowners ask us
We work in Hanover regularly. We’re based in York, about 20 minutes away, and Hanover is one of our most active service areas. No trip charge, no difference in pricing. If you are in Hanover Borough, Penn Township, Conewago Township, or anywhere in the surrounding area, we are happy to come out for a free estimate.
It depends on the work. In Hanover Borough, building permits are required for structural work like new foundation walls, walls over 4 feet, and additions. Surface work like repointing, sealing, or resurfacing typically does not require a permit. Patio installation requirements vary. We check with the Hanover Borough permitting office before starting and pull permits when they are required. Penn Township and Conewago Township have their own requirements, and we handle those as well.
Usually yes. Many Hanover homes use brick that was produced regionally in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We source from local suppliers who carry matching brick, and for very old or unusual brick, we can sometimes find salvaged units. We are honest when an exact match is not possible, and we show you samples before ordering. For repointing, we custom-mix the mortar to match the original color and texture so the repair blends in.
It varies by project. Repointing runs $10 to $25 per square foot. Paver patios run $14 to $22 per square foot. Retaining walls run $40 to $80 per square foot of wall face. Sealing runs $1.50 to $4 per square foot. We give written, itemized estimates after seeing the site. No ballpark guesses over the phone. Each of our service pages has more detailed pricing information.
Typical lead time is 2 to 6 weeks depending on the season and the size of the job. Spring and early summer book up fastest. Small jobs like sealing or minor repointing can sometimes be scheduled within a week or two. For larger projects like patios and retaining walls, the sooner you start the conversation, the better your spot on the schedule.
