Old brick, steep lots, and 130 winters of freeze-thaw
The older homes in Glen Rock Borough were built with soft brick and lime mortar. That combination lasted over a century because lime mortar is designed to be the sacrificial layer: it flexes, breathes, and wears out before the brick does. When a modern contractor repoints those joints with hard portland cement, the system breaks. The brick starts to spall, the mortar cracks at the edges, and the wall deteriorates faster than it ever did before the “repair.” We fix this regularly in Glen Rock.
The borough also has a lot of sloped lots, especially on the streets running perpendicular to the Codorus Creek valley. That means retaining walls, and retaining walls in this part of York County need proper drainage behind them. Water pressure from saturated soil is what pushes walls over.
