A small borough with a lot of masonry worth keeping
Glen Rock is one of those York County boroughs where the old buildings are the best buildings. The homes along Main Street and the surrounding blocks date back to the late 1800s, built with locally produced brick, stone foundations, and mortar that has been holding things together for over a century. The newer neighborhoods around the borough edges have their own masonry needs too: settling patios, retaining walls on sloped lots, chimneys due for their first serious maintenance.
We work in Glen Rock and the surrounding area regularly. We know the housing stock, and we know what the Glen Rock Borough permit process looks like for different types of work. Important note: the borough says to contact their office first, not the zoning officer directly. We handle the permit process as part of the job.
If you have been looking at a cracked chimney, crumbling mortar joints, a leaning retaining wall, or a patio that has shifted over the years, send us a photo. We will tell you straight what it needs.

Retaining Walls
Stone, block, or brick. Footings below frost, real drainage, geogrid where needed. Glen Rock’s sloped lots and older foundations make retaining walls one of our most common jobs in this area.
Retaining wall detailsPaver Patio Installation
Concrete pavers, flagstone, or clay brick. Built on a compacted base that actually holds its shape through Pennsylvania winters. The patio that is still flat in twenty years.
Patio installation detailsHistorical Restoration
Glen Rock has its share of pre-1950 brick, especially in the borough center. We repoint with lime mortar, match the original joint profile, and replace failed bricks one at a time. The work that keeps old houses old in the good way.
Historical restoration detailsBlock & Brick Wall Installation
New garden walls, privacy walls, foundation walls, mailbox pillars. Block, brick, or block core with brick veneer. Built with proper footings and clean joints.
Wall installation detailsMasonry Sealing
Brick, stone, pavers, and concrete. Penetrating sealers that stop water before it freezes and spalls. The cheapest insurance your masonry can have.
Sealing detailsHardscaping
Patios, walkways, stone steps, fire pits, seating walls, and everything else permanent in the yard. Doing it together costs less than doing it in pieces.
Hardscaping detailsOld brick, steep lots, and 130 winters of freeze-thaw
The older homes in Glen Rock Borough were built with soft brick and lime mortar. That combination lasted over a century because lime mortar is designed to be the sacrificial layer: it flexes, breathes, and wears out before the brick does. When a modern contractor repoints those joints with hard portland cement, the system breaks. The brick starts to spall, the mortar cracks at the edges, and the wall deteriorates faster than it ever did before the “repair.” We fix this regularly in Glen Rock.
The borough also has a lot of sloped lots, especially on the streets running perpendicular to the Codorus Creek valley. That means retaining walls, and retaining walls in this part of York County need proper drainage behind them. Water pressure from saturated soil is what pushes walls over. We build every wall here with that in mind.
For newer homes on the borough edges and in Springfield Township, the common issues are different: patios settling because the base was too shallow, chimneys that need their first crown replacement after 25 years, and concrete that is starting to show its age. All fixable when done right.
Glen Rock has some of the best original brickwork in southern York County. Our job is to keep it that way, not replace it with something that looks like it went up last week.

What Glen Rock homeowners ask us
We work in Glen Rock regularly. We’re based in York, about 20 minutes north, and Glen Rock is in our core service area. No trip charge, no difference in pricing. If you are in the borough or the surrounding area (Shrewsbury, New Freedom, Railroad, Springfield Township, Codorus Township), we are happy to come out for a free estimate.
It depends on the work. In Glen Rock Borough, building permits are required for structural work like new foundation walls, walls over 4 feet, and additions. Permit applications go through the Borough Office first (important: don’t call the zoning officer directly, the borough will bill you). Residential permits take about 15 business days for review, commercial takes 30 days. Surface work like repointing, sealing, or patio installation typically needs a zoning permit but not a full building permit. We check before starting and handle the paperwork as part of the job.
Usually yes. Most Glen Rock homes use brick that was produced regionally in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We source from local suppliers who carry matching units, and for very old or unusual brick we can sometimes find salvaged material. We are honest when an exact match is not achievable and show you samples before ordering. For repointing, we custom-mix the mortar color and texture to match the original so the repair blends into the wall instead of standing out.
Same as the rest of York County. Repointing runs $10 to $25 per square foot. Paver patios run $14 to $22 per square foot. Retaining walls run $40 to $80 per square foot of wall face. Sealing runs $1.50 to $4 per square foot. We give written, itemized estimates after seeing the site. Each of our service pages has more detailed pricing information.
Typical lead time is 2 to 6 weeks depending on the season and the size of the job. Spring and early summer book up fastest. Small jobs like sealing or minor repointing can sometimes be scheduled within a week or two. For larger projects, the sooner you start the conversation, the better your spot on the schedule.
